DJ Heather Interview

Hi Heather! :)

Could you introduce yourself and your musical style, please?
I consider my style to be Chicago house, which is a mixture of various types of dance music. Elements of techno, garage, acid, classic disco etc fused together to make one signature sound.

You played at Fabric on Saturday 14th July; what does being a Fabric resident mean to you?
Being a frequent guest of Fabric has been amazing. I really appreciate the clubs attention to detail which first and foremost begins with sound.

As a key member of the Om Records family you have mixed the new Summer Sessions album; how do you go about putting a mix together?
When putting together a mix I try to find a core or heart of the mix, a few track ideas and work from there. Ideally every mix cd shouldn’t sound the same, which applies to live sets. I choose a few cds as snapshots and there should be room for experimentation.

If you had to pick your favourite summer location where would it be and what would you be doing?
Fave summer location is home in Chicago. When the weather finally breaks the city transforms and there is so much to do. Midwesterners relish the warm weather because we get it a few months out of the year.

You are from Chicago; the home of house and specifically jackin house but made a name in the city for spinning hip hop initially; what inspired you to make the change to a house beat?
I have always played house and hip hop. I never made a conscious choice to play one or another. I think over time people seemed to enjoy my house sets and focused on that. I still play downtempo and rare groove when I get the chance.

If you are at home with a group of friends; what would be on your stereo?
At home with friends we would probably just battle over music choices. So definitely a mix of styles would be on the stereo.

Your new single “Everything’s Electric” with Brett Johnson is due out soon; will you be releasing on vinyl and where to do you stand on the digital versus vinyl debate?
The single "Everythings Electric" will be coming out on Dotbleep, digital and vinyl format. Its all about how you use the medium. The sound that comes out of the speakers is what matters in the end.

Finally, if you had to choose three artists that you would love to work with who would they be?
Off the top of my head; Phil Weeks, Recloose and The Angel to name a few.

Thanks Heather! ?
